Screenings

Health Screenings

At CollaborativeNP Health Center, we are staunch proponents of proactive and preventive healthcare. To empower our patients to take charge of their health and well-being, we provide a diverse range of screenings.

Blood Pressure

A blood pressure screening is a quick and non-invasive test that measures the force of blood against the walls of your arteries. It is expressed as two numbers: the systolic pressure (the force when the heart beats) over the diastolic pressure (the force when the heart is at rest between beats). For example, a reading of 120/80 mm Hg is considered normal.

For this screening, our medical team will secure a cuff around your upper arm, gradually inflating it to observe blood flow. Subsequently, the cuff is released, and our healthcare professionals utilize a stethoscope to detect the returning sound of blood flow in your arm.

Why is a Blood Pressure Screening Important?

  • Early Detection of Hypertension: High blood pressure, or hypertension, often presents with no noticeable symptoms. Regular screenings help identify elevated blood pressure early, allowing for timely intervention.

  • Prevention of Cardiovascular Issues: Hypertension is a significant risk factor for heart disease and stroke. By monitoring blood pressure regularly, we can implement preventive measures to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events.

  • Customized Health Management: Blood pressure screenings enable our healthcare professionals at CollaborativeNP Health Center to tailor health management plans specific to your needs, whether through lifestyle adjustments or medical interventions.

  • Overall Well-being: Maintaining optimal blood pressure contributes to your overall well-being. It ensures that your organs, particularly the heart and kidneys, receive an adequate blood supply, promoting better health and vitality.

Diabetic

A diabetic screening is a targeted assessment aimed at identifying risk factors and early signs of diabetes mellitus, a chronic condition characterized by elevated blood sugar levels. This screening typically involves blood tests to measure fasting blood glucose levels or Hemoglobin A1c levels.

Our diabetes screening options include:

  • Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT):  Involves consuming a sugary solution, followed by blood sugar level checks two hours later.
  • Hemoglobin A1C Test:  Measures the sugar attached to red blood cells, offering a comprehensive assessment of long-term blood sugar control.

Both the fasting plasma glucose test and the hemoglobin A1C test involve a regular blood draw from your arm through a needle, ensuring accurate results for your diabetes risk assessment.

For ongoing monitoring, individuals with diabetes perform regular self-tests, involving a simple finger prick to obtain a small blood sample. This quick and easy procedure allows for convenient monitoring of blood sugar levels.

Why is a Diabetic Screening Important?

  • Early Detection of Diabetes: Diabetes often develops without noticeable symptoms in its early stages. Regular screenings can detect elevated blood sugar levels before symptoms appear, enabling early intervention.

  • Prevention of Complications: Timely detection and management of diabetes are crucial in preventing complications such as heart disease, kidney damage, nerve problems, and vision impairment.

  • Lifestyle Intervention: A diabetic screening allows healthcare professionals to provide personalized advice on diet, exercise, and lifestyle modifications to manage blood sugar levels effectively.

  • Improved Quality of Life: By identifying diabetes early, individuals can take proactive steps to maintain optimal health, leading to a better quality of life.

  • Customized Treatment Plans: Should diabetes be diagnosed, screenings aid in developing individualized treatment plans that may include medication, dietary changes, and exercise recommendations.

  • Monitoring Overall Health: Diabetic screenings are not just about managing diabetes; they also provide insights into overall health. Regular screenings may uncover other risk factors that can be addressed for comprehensive well-being.

  • Reduced Long-Term Healthcare Costs: Early detection and management of diabetes can lead to reduced long-term healthcare costs by preventing or mitigating complications that may require extensive medical intervention.

Asthma

An asthma screening is a comprehensive evaluation designed to assess respiratory function and identify potential signs and risk factors associated with asthma. This screening typically involves breathing tests, medical history reviews, and symptom assessments to determine the likelihood of asthma.

There are two primary methods for asthma screenings:  Spirometry and Peak Flow Measurement.

Spirometry is the most widely used asthma screening, assessing the volume of air you can inhale and exhale and the speed at which you can do so. Using a spirometer, a small device you blow into, the test provides results indicating the efficiency of your lung function.

Peak flow measurement is another asthma screening method, gauging the volume of air you can forcefully exhale in one breath. The results of this test provide insights into lung function and the overall control of your asthma.

Both spirometry and peak flow measurement are rapid and straightforward tests.

Why is an Asthma Screening Important?

  • Early Detection of Asthma: Asthma symptoms can be subtle in the early stages, and individuals may dismiss them as occasional respiratory issues. Screening helps identify asthma early, allowing for prompt intervention.

  • Proactive Management: Early detection enables healthcare professionals to develop proactive management plans, including medications, lifestyle modifications, and environmental adjustments to control asthma symptoms effectively.

  • Prevention of Exacerbations: Regular screenings help identify triggers and factors that may exacerbate asthma symptoms. By understanding these triggers, individuals can take preventive measures to minimize the risk of asthma attacks.

  • Improved Quality of Life: Managing asthma through screenings and proper treatment contributes to a better quality of life. Individuals can engage in daily activities without the hindrance of uncontrolled asthma symptoms.

  • Customized Treatment Plans: Asthma screenings aid in tailoring treatment plans based on the severity and specific triggers of asthma for each individual, ensuring a personalized approach to care.

High Cholesterol

A high cholesterol screening is a diagnostic test designed to measure the levels of cholesterol in your blood. Cholesterol is a fatty substance vital for building cells and producing certain hormones, but elevated levels can contribute to atherosclerosis, a condition where plaque builds up in the arteries, potentially leading to heart disease and stroke.

How It Is Performed:

  • Blood Sample: A small blood sample is typically drawn from a vein in your arm using a needle.
  • Fasting Requirement: In some cases, you may be asked to fast for 9-12 hours before the test to obtain accurate lipid profile results, including total cholesterol, LDL (low-density lipoprotein), HDL (high-density lipoprotein), and triglyceride levels.
  • Laboratory Analysis: The blood sample is sent to a laboratory for analysis. The results provide a comprehensive profile of your cholesterol levels.

Why is a High Cholesterol Screening Important?

  • Early Detection of Risk: High cholesterol often presents with no symptoms. Screening helps detect elevated levels early, allowing for proactive measures to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

  • Prevention of Heart Disease and Stroke: Elevated cholesterol is a significant risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Screening allows for the identification of potential cardiovascular risks and the implementation of preventive strategies.

  • Customized Treatment Plans: Screening results guide healthcare professionals in developing personalized treatment plans, including lifestyle modifications and, if necessary, medication to manage cholesterol levels effectively.

  • Lifestyle Modification: A high cholesterol screening serves as an opportunity to discuss lifestyle changes, such as dietary adjustments, regular exercise, and smoking cessation, to promote heart health.

  • Monitoring Treatment Effectiveness: For individuals already undergoing cholesterol-lowering treatment, regular screenings help assess the effectiveness of the intervention and make necessary adjustments.

  • Overall Cardiovascular Health: High cholesterol is a modifiable risk factor. By addressing it through screening and subsequent interventions, individuals can actively contribute to maintaining optimal cardiovascular health.
